Cyma Company Information

Background

Cyma is a privately held Washington 'C' Corporation founded in 1995. It has exclusive license to manufacture and produce the StepWatch System (US Patent #5,485,402). Cyma has received phase 1 & 2 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grants through the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to refine and further develop the StepWatch System. Cyma expects the award of a fast-track NIH SBIR grant in 2004 to develop another innovative product.

StepWatch History

The StepWatch System was developed in the mid 1990's as a research tool for looking at real-world outcomes in the field of lower limb prosthetics. Researchers were interested in the consequences of interventions such as switching to a different prosthetic foot. Did a patient walk more with the new hardware? Initial studies included a study of diabetic subjects at risk of amputation.

Reports in the literature and presentations brought interest from other researchers and soon the StepWatch system was being sold on a modest level to researchers in other fields for several years before the technology was licensed to Cyma.
